Know your own Learning Style
Although professors of traditional classes have a specific way of teaching, many students have their own learning styles. Some people find that they work better alone because they need time to absorb the material. Others work better in groups because the group discussions stimulate their brains and they understand the concepts from examples provided by others in the group. And now, with the availability of videos, there is another way to learn. Previously, students learned the course material by reading the designated chapters from the textbooks, and taking notes from the professor's lessons. But with online videos, some do better hearing and seeing a concept than reading it themselves and trying to assimilate the information. Consequently, it is so important to know your own learning style in order to make the best of your online education.
Learning style also refers to the best time of day for you to absorb the concepts. For example, some people are just not able to function when they first get out of bed in the morning. Others have difficulty in the early evenings. Knowing your peak learning periods will make the tasks easier to complete, and will actually help you to write better assignments, and submit projects that receive higher grades.
Learning is difficult in any environment. Whether you study at a physical school or learn from home through a school's distance learning program, outside factors creep in and play havoc with your mind, and ultimately ruin your focus. This is why it is necessary to identify and know your own learning style. It will help you to remove or ignore the things that cause you problems when learning. Instead of fighting with your body, work with it, and your strengths will result in positive behaviors. Learning should be fun, and finding the right medium is key to your success. Admittedly, we still must do things that we do not like, but overall, we can make the experience much more pleasant for ourselves.
By knowing your own special learning style before you choose your classes, you can actually work that information into your schedule. Your routine and your work area will be created depending on your style of learning. And, of course, this is not cast in stone. If you realize after a couple days or weeks, that the way in which you have chosen is not working like you expected, you adjust your style and schedule to better meet your requirements. The end goal is to receive your degree, so you need to leverage your strengths to get there.
