Don't Overestimate Yourself

Unquestionably, there is nothing wrong with aiming high, and trying to do the best you can at anything you undertake. Sadly, many good aspirations turn into failed endeavors because people do not plan ahead, or they do not understand the extent of their responsibilities. Then, there are others who are just plain arrogant and think they can do anything without any effort at all. And, the last category involves those individuals who honestly believe that they can accomplish everything they desire, but end up finding out that they have taken on too much. And while we do not want to appear as though we enjoy discouraging you, we feel that we must warn you about overestimating yourself.

Not everyone believes they are super humans. In fact, most students that enroll in online programs and take extra courses do so because they truly want to get ahead, and feel that they can endure the madness for a short time. The pressures are great, contradicting one of the most common online education myths. Reading and understanding the course material, completing assignments, studying for tests, participating in online discussions, writing essays, and traveling to the school if necessary. Any type of education is grueling, but when you work at home, the exterior forces that come into play make studying that much harder. There are always other demands upon your time and it is easy to get sidetracked. And while credit should be given to those who try to work at a job, manage a family, and enroll in online classes, sometimes too much is just that, and we have to remind you "don't overestimate yourself". You cannot be everything to everyone.

Full-time students find the rigors of higher education demanding. Yes, they have social events they want to attend, and yes others provide distractions, but in general, everyone on campus is there for the same reason. To acquire an education and subsequently, a degree. They know that in a few short years, they will stand on that podium in cap and gown and proudly accept their prestigious sheet of paper. But times can be tough on those learning outside of the traditional channels. Online students who have jobs, for example, may be too tired to get started on their lessons when they come home from work. Even if they book time for classes, they cannot control how they feel when their job shift is done. If something happens at work, it encroaches upon the study time routine, and clouds one's ability to effectively perform. And as hard as they try, they cannot overcome the vicious circle. Once they fall behind a little, it turns into a snowball, which grows bigger and bigger.

Then the discouragement and feelings of failure start to creep into the equation. Now, they are not only tired physically, and falling behind academically, they are also mentally beaten, which means they have a higher chance of quitting. Because education is so important, and because it really is a wonderful goal to achieve your educational dreams, we recommend that you look realistically at your situation, choose classes that fit your schedule, and try not to overestimate yourself, because we are only human after all.
