Block out known distractions

With all of today's technology, and so many activities competing for our attention, it is understandably difficult to study at times. Phones ringing, televisions blaring, text messages bleeping, emails waiting to be answered, instant message screens flashing, and quick access to online magazines, all contribute to poor study habits. And while some students are very good at ignoring things that are clearly disruptive, others need to learn how to block out known distractions.

Basically, unless your small children are crying and need assistance, or there is a fire raging in the house, there is absolutely no reason to succumb to outside disturbances. The first thing that you need to do is shut everything off. Your voice mail box will hold telephone messages until you are ready to hear them, and you certainly don't need to know the latest gossip from from you friend's text messages until you are finished your study time for the day. Distractions and interruptions are time wasters, and you must learn to manage that time more effectively and more wisely. There are only twenty-four hours in the day, and once they are gone, they cannot be recouped. In theory, if you waste time tending to these outside factors, you are effectively losing money because the cost of your tuition is being wasted on trivialities.

Similar to setting up a work space within your home, you also need to set parameters to deal with distractions according to The Internet Education Help Site. If you are supposed to be working from seven until eleven, then during that time, you do not throw a load of laundry in the machine, wash the dishes, sweep the floor, or even answer telephones, email, text messages, or the door. These are all avoidance tactics and you are only trying to find ways to get away from your studies. Procrastination is a serious problem for online students, as they may not be required to be online at specific times like students in the classroom, who must attend at the given hours. Instead, go to your work space at the assigned time, and use the hours productively to accomplish something.

In addition, if you do have children, make arrangements with others so that you can completely commit to your education during the time that you have scheduled for study. Not only will you avoid the distractions from the children playing and crying, but you will not always be worrying about what they are doing. Knowing they are safe will make it easier to study.

Your education is important to you, and you must provide yourself with the best possible work atmosphere to succeed.
